Personal & Group Counseling

Counseling includes helping people make needed changes in ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving, and is a goal-based collaborative process, involving a non-judgmental, supportive counselor who works with students (undergraduates & postgraduates) individually or in groups (5-15 people) in telling their stories, setting viable goals, and developing strategies and plans necessary to accomplish these goals.

Support Services for Disabled Students

A disability is any condition which makes it more difficult for a person to do certain activities or interact with the world around them. These conditions, or impairments, may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or a combination of multiple factors.

At our counseling center we use all available means so that students with disabilities can best meet the requirements of their studies.

About Us

The Student Counseling Center was established by a decision of the Senate (166th / 24-05-02) and has been operating since September 2003.

More specific issues related to the operation and the code of ethics of the Center are regulated by its Internal Rules of Operation, which were approved by the Senate of the institution.

There are two branches of the Center, one in Rethymno and one in Heraklion.

The Center is staffed by psychologists and permanent administrative staff and is supervised by a five-member Scientific Committee, while administratively it belongs to the Rector's Office of the institution.

In order to achieve its goals, when necessary, the Student Counseling Center seeks the cooperation of academic advisors and other services of the institution. It also collaborates with the public health services of the cities of Rethymno, Heraklion and with external scientific collaborators.

The main goal of the Student Counseling Center is to provide the following services:

1. To offer individual and group counseling and support to students who face occasional difficulties in developmental, personal and educational issues and adaptation problems.

2. To offer services in the field of prevention by helping students to utilize their abilities, in their academic and personal space.

Programs should be designed to help students develop: self-awareness, self-efficacy, self-control, career activism, and interpersonal relationships. Preventive interventions can take the form of group thematic interventions in places such as dormitories or student hangouts, or in the form of printed or electronic information on various topics ...

  • To support students to get to know themselves better and to meet their developmental needs in the best possible way, through the cultivation of academic, emotional and interpersonal skills.
  • To offer individual and group psychological support services to students who face occasional difficulties in developmental, personal and educational issues. Indicatively, the cases are mentioned:
    • difficulty adjusting to a new lifestyle,
    • difficulties in friendship, family or love relationships
problems of loneliness, anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms or sleep disorders
    • time management problems, decision making, inability to concentrate, reduced efficiency, lack of interest.
  • To contribute to the field of prevention through information programs (writing and distribution of brochures, speeches, etc.)
  • Assist in the effort of active involvement of students in the community, by creating groups of volunteers and holding a forum to raise awareness of students and members of the wider community on social issues.
  • To develop initiatives and programs for the better adaptation of students with disabilities to the university environment and their equal access to academic studies.
  • To conduct studies and develop a variety of activities aimed at improving the quality of life of students as well as highlighting and addressing general problems.
